Known to many and still being discovered by new generations, Sweaty Betty's at 13 Ossington Ave in Toronto, Ontario is a true neighbourhood original. One of the first bars in the now dense bar and restaurant district between Queen West, Ossington and Dundas, Sweaty Betty's started 15 years ago and has endured as an independently-owned operation ever since. The bar's owner, May Brand, with over 20 years experience in the industry, has owned Sweaty Betty's for the last 2 of those years and managed the bar for 11 years before that. She and her tenured staff have maintained a perfect dive bar culture since 2004, with the right mix of attitude, sarcasm, and strong drinks.
May has fought harder than anyone to not only keep and maintain the location in a rapidly more expensive Toronto market, but also to be a supportive community leader and someone who will speak up against intolerant thinking and attitudes. Sweaty Betty's has evolved through neighbourhood changes to become a champion of safe spaces, while still maintaining their essential dive bar atmosphere.
If you're down for some great bar tunes, classic cocktails, and mismatched furniture, Sweaty Betty's is the perfect place for an after work drink, a weekend party night or a Sunday Caesar on their large patio (a west-end hidden gem). The DJs spin regularly, and the cocktail menu has never been better. There may not be a toaster oven anymore, but May has stocked a well curated selection of vegan chips and snacks. Daily drink specials keep things interesting and the bartenders are some of the best in the city.
As of June 26, 2020, the bar has reopened with new Covid-19 regulations in place to ensure social distancing and safety. Come visit the bar today or pick up some apparel online, and check out the favourite west-end place that locals and regulars have been raving about for the last 15 years.
